Carotid Intima-Media Thickness — Carotid IMT

Carotid intima-media thickness is a marker of vascular disease and can help identify subclinical atherosclerosis. This test is different from a conventional carotid doppler ultrasound, which looks for plaque buildup and limitation to flow, and instead focusses on the health of the artery wall in the two vulnerable layers — the intima and media. Disease here precedes significant plaque buildup and stenosis development.

Values increase with age but an IMT over 0.9mm generally suggests elevated cardiovascular risk. This test is performed using safe, non-invasive ultrasonography.
