Biogerentology is the study of the biological ageing process and interventions to slow ageing. Ageing, which involves progressive loss of physical function and fitness, happens at different rates in different people. Factors that tend to speed this process up and others which slow it down are being identified. Although there are definitely genes which permit longer and healthier life it now seems that a patient’s epigenetics, the DNA methylation and histone patterns which govern the expression of various genes, may be of greater importance in ageing. Environmental factors usually have little impact on our genetics, but they can definitely alter our epigenetics — because epigenetic changes alter gene expression they can be targeted to prolonging health-span and lifespan.
